WEEK IN A PEEK!
August 28, 2009
THIS WEEK WE: finished our color review. We talked about the colors green, orange, purple, brown and black. Today was Clifford Day! It was a fun way to culminate our color activities. We read lots of Clifford books and made a graph of our favorites. We started introducing a child to the class each day. Cody was able to share things about himself and be the Lucky Frog for a day. (We call it frog because they got to be in the frog tent during our quiet time.) Through this activity they are forming an awareness of letters and words and finding out things about their new friends. We will continue that until all 19 students have been interviewed. :)
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: We will continue interviewing the students and do some “all about me” activities. In math we are exploring math manipulatives. We will explore all kinds of things that can be sorted, sequenced, counted or patterned in some way.
SHOESBOXES: We make small books throughout the year with words they are beginning to learn to read. I am sending the first one home today titled Balloons. Please provide a container about the size of a shoebox that your child can store his/her books at home. Have your child practice reading them regularly and adding to the collection as the year progresses. Thanks!
READING SLIPS: I will enclose a reading slip each week with the Friday folder. As you read at home, write the title down on the slip and return to school when it is filled with 10 book titles. I have received a few this week. That is a great start!
Reading and being read to opens the door to school success!
MERIT AWARDS:
Congratulations to Kailey and Ashcroft. They received a Merit Award this week for displaying outstanding cooperation. Way to go!
BOOT CAMP: This is an all school assembly honoring Caring Kids in our school. One child is selected from each classroom to represent our character word for the month. The August character word is cooperation. Kailey Tate has been selected to represent out room. The assembly will be at 10:00 on Monday morning! You are welcome to attend!
(shhh! Don’t tell Kailey. It will be a surprise!)
GRANDPARENT DAY: Sept. 28th
THEME: All About Me

WEEK IN A PEEK!
August 21, 2009
THIS WEEK WE: had great first days of kindergarten. We learned to spell red blue and yellow! They can sing a song for each too! We talked a little about school rules and how important it is to cooperate with our classmates and teachers. We took a cup of water, dropped some red food coloring in it and watched as the molecules of H20 hit each other and spread the red color throughout the whole cup of water. It was amazing! Of course we had to do that with blue and yellow also!
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: continue learning about our color words. Remember, Monday is orange day. We will also start interviewing a student each day so we can get to know everyone better. CLIFFORD DAY is next Friday. Have your child wear red. We will plan Clifford activities all day.
BOOK ORDERS: I am sending home an order form for Scholastic Books. If you would like to order, please fill out the form and enclose it in an envelope with a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs. Please make sure it is in a sealed envelope labeled Scholastic Books so it doesn’t get lost and I know what it is. It takes about a couple of weeks to receive the order.
ALL ABOUT ME: If you have not sent the All about me form back with a picture, please do so on Monday. Thanks!
READING SLIPS: Enclosed is a reading slip. As you read to your child, write the title on a line. When you have ten books recorded, return it to school and your child will earn a cut out shape. He will get a sticker for each reading slip returned. At the end of the month, I will send a special treat for all that have sent in at least one reading slip. We will do August and September together to give everyone plenty of time.
MERIT AWARDS: I will award merit award stickers to 1 or 2 students each week. I will be looking for students displaying positive attitudes, cooperating with others, being kind, and working hard at school. I will start looking next week! I am sure it will be a difficult job to just find 2 students that display those traits!
SCHOOL PICTURES: Aug.27th. Return payment envelop on Monday.
THANK YOU: for picking up the frogs. I appreciate it so much!
COOPERATION: is our character word this month. We had a kick-off assembly this morning. I will be looking for someone to represent our class that exhibits cooperation.
They will be honored at the end of the month at our Caring Kids Assembly.
BLOG: I will post the newsletter on the blog each week along with any pictures that I happen to take.
