WEEK IN A PEEK!
April 23, 2010
Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: continued study of insects and watched our caterpillars grow. We have 12 that will hopefully develop into butterflies! “The Grouchy Ladybug” helped us with telling time and we continue to write stories.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: talk about zoo animals. They love animals of all kinds so I am sure they will enjoy finding books in the library about different zoo animals.
FIELD TRIP: It was great. The weather cooperated! An extra special thank you to all the parents that helped out! You’re awesome!

SPRING CARNIVAL: APRIL 30TH If you have not sent donations for our raffle basket, send ASAP.
Kindergarten Celebration! Our theme is Getting Down With Mother Goose! It is on the calendar for May 4th in the gym at Mathews Elementary.
Students are asked to arrive by 6:15 p.m. and report to their classroom to be ready for the performance at 6:30 p.m. A rehearsal will be held earlier that day.
SUMMER SCHOOL: If you are planning to send your child to summer school, be sure to return the enrollment form soon. It would be a great peek into 1st grade.

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: read the classic Tale of Peter Rabbit. It is a great story! We wrote books, counted and graphed eggs, and had a great time hunting Easter Eggs! Thanks for sending the eggs. The weather was perfect! I will post pictures on the blog. http://mountjoyskindergartenclass.blogspot.com
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: begin a unit about plants. We will explore what a plant needs to live, grow and become strong. Of course we will have to write about them.
FIELD TRIP: We will tour the Springfield Cardinals Stadium on April 22nd Thanks for sending the permission slip so quickly. We are getting all the paper work done! If you haven’t sent the permission slip yet, please send next week. Now we just need the weather to cooperate.

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: explored the solar system. I think almost everyone can name the nine planets that orbit our sun. They have done a lot of writing and aliens seem to be a common topic. We also talked about the phases of our moon. I hope you will encourage your child to look in the night sky and identify the phase of the moon this month as it waxes and wanes.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: talk about the farm. This is one of my favorite topics because I grew up on a farm! As one of 5 daughters, Dad worked all of us pretty hard. (He would laugh to hear me say that. I am sure he didn’t think we worked hard enough.) Mom also had some pretty high expectations. We were all taught how to cook, sew, take care of farm animals and drive the tractor. I am planning for the children to write riddles about something on a farm.
READING SLIPS: CONGRATULATIONS once again to the following students that have met their monthly reading goal: Mason, Connor, Katie, Cody, Johnny, Alison, Nolan, Erin, Isaac, Markus, Marley, Joshua, Kailey, Michaela, and Apryl. Special congrats to Kailey! She read 80 books during the month of February. Way to go, Kailey! A Pizza Hut Coupon is enclosed. WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: packed for a pretend picnic, as we wrote our book this week. We also sequenced and wrote a book about the Little Red Hen. We decided it was a good idea to help out when people ask us. Actually, everyone in the class said they would have happily helped out planting the wheat and taking care of the plants. I know they enjoy eating fresh bread right from the oven! We did that! We read lots of books with food in them and thought about the added benefit of healthy teeth. (They really made us hungry.) Thanks for the nutritious foods you sent for snacks this week. We had something special every day!
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: take a look at day and night (complete with phases of the moon) and look past our atmosphere into space. Here’s a way to remember the planets. My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas. Can you name them? In recent years they have found a couple other planets too. There is also a controversy as to whether some planets are really planets. We will talk about things astronauts need in space and of course write a book. We will make a space scene to help us remember the planets. We are working a lot with word families such as sun, run, fun etc. and rhyming words. Practice at home too.
End of Quarter: The end of 3rd quarter is March. 11th. I am testing. You may want to practice with your child this weekend recognizing numbers to 31, counting to 100 and reviewing letter sounds.
CARING KID: Marley is our Caring Kid for February! Our word was trustworthiness. She is a great example of that trait! Congratulations!
READING SLIPS: Monday will be the last day I will accept reading slips for February. After that any slip will go toward the March reading goal.

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: studied about Missouri. We made a special poster to record facts learned about Missouri. By the end of the week, it was our goal to be able to recognize the shape of Missouri and know something about landforms (mountain, valley, river etc. In addition, I hope they will be able to tell you the state bird, the state insect, and other state symbols. Our Valentine party was today! Thank you to all the parents involved in making it a special event for our class! :)
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: talk about the community helpers at our post office. We will recognize their hard work 6 days a week getting the mail delivered all over our country. My dad worked as a substitute mailman so I have fond memories of getting to go with dad on his rural route and trying to quickly stuff the mail in the boxes. If I was really good, he would buy me a coke. Those were the days!
BOOK FAIR: The Book Fair started started today, Feb. 5th and will continue through next Thursday evening, Feb. 11th. They have some great books!
BOOK SLIPS: Congratulations to the following students that turned in book slips for the month of January.

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: talked about the impact Martin Luther King, Jr. had on our country today. They seemed to be very interested in why people were so mistreated. We are doing a lot of writing! Composing a story means you need to put events in an order and write what happened first, next and last. We did that with a couple projects this week. They did an awesome job!
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: celebrate the 100th day of school. We have been counting up to 100 and looking forward to getting to 100 since the beginning of school. Please send a ziplock bag with 100 of something next Monday. It can be 100 paper clips, 100 cheerios, 100 pieces of candy, (we won’t eat it! At least we will try not to! :), 100 nails, 100 stickers. We will compare by weighing, sorting and classifying them into categories throughout the week. The official 100th day of school will be next Tuesday. We will have fun 100 ways!
PARENT CONFERENCES: Feb. 9th and 11th. We will have a traditional conference. Attached is a sheet with time slots. It will be first come first serve. Just fill out the time that best fits your schedule and return to me. I will try to honor the time you select as closely as I can. I will send a confirmation to you by the end of next week. Thank you.
VALENTINE DAY PARTY:
Our PTA moms will be hosting a party for our classroom on Friday, Feb. 5th. I don’t know a lot of detail yet but I understand it will have a 50’s theme! If your child wants to make a special container to put their valentines in, please be working on that at home. Use your imagination and each child will have a very unique container! Send to school sometime during the week of Feb.1st. Below is a list of children’s names in our class. They can address valentines to their classmates and deliver them before the party on Feb. 5th!

THIS WEEK WE: worked with mittens. We did some reading and writing about penguins. We have been counting by 2’s as well as measuring items with cubes.
Did you know mice have tails that are different lengths and can be measured? We did it!
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: continue with a winter theme talking about snowy winter days.

We have started a lot of new things this week and continuing others. Please don’t let this overwhelm you. I want to encourage you to continue with the Fast Start poem. If you need to do it every other night so you can spend time on the bag book that is fine! Do what you can do. The main thing is spending time reading with your child. I have two parents that have volunteered their time for the children to read the bag book when it is returned. Yeah! By the way you can count the time you spend on Fast Start and the Bag Book as a book on the Book Slip! Everyone does not have a Bag Book yet but they will soon!

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
LAST WEEK WE: got reacquainted and talked about our new year. Winter is here and with it the cold weather is upon us. VERY COLD! We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and several other books that had mittens in them. We have found matching mittens, added mittens, and counted mittens by two’s. We are writing a book and introducing the words said and have to our reading vocabulary.
THIS WEEK WE WILL: continue with mitten, snow and possibly penguin activities.
REPORT CARDS: are going home today. Please sign and return the envelope on tomorrow in the Friday folder.
DECEMBER BOOK SLIPS: Congratulations to Mason, Sophie, Connor, Cody, Johnny, Alison, Nolan, Isaac, Markus, Marley, Joshua, Kailey Michaela, Apryl and Alaya for meeting the goal of at least 10 books read for the month. Cody, Johnny, Markus and Kailey turned in 50 books! Good job! You will find your Pizza Hut coupon in the Friday Folder. I know with the holiday it wasn’t always easy to make time to read with your child. It does pay off though. Please continue to read every night and turn in the reading slips as you get 10 books read. If you have not been reading with your child, it is not too late. Start tonight!
BOOK ORDER: There is a Scholastic book order enclosed. Please return the order next Monday with the Friday Folder. Be sure to put the order form along with the money sealed in an envelope. Our class user name is: MountjoysKClass and the password is: bookorder I have enclosed a note about this also. The cut-off for on-line orders is Jan. 20th.
Letter and Word Rings: Every student needs to be able to recognize all the letters and the sounds they make very soon. Most of the children have mastered this already. I am making a “word ring” for each child. As they “pass” each set of 10 words they will receive a homework sheet. Please have your child make the book and return it so they can get their next set of “word ring” words. I will introduce it to the class this week and we will get started on it. It is so exciting!
BAG BOOKS: I am sending home little books in ziplock bags when I feel your child is ready for this challenge. Please read the book several times with your child. Begin by looking at the pictures and have your child tell you what he/she thinks is happening in the story. Then go back and read it to your child. Then go back again and have the child try to read it to you. The children are at different stages in their reading readiness. Help them where they need it and encourage them. MITTEN TREE: We have a mitten tree set up in our room. With the cold weather the mittens we donate will very much appreciated. I will keep the tree up for two weeks and then they will be donated to Least of These. Several brought in mittens, gloves and even hats this week. LAST WEEK WE: got reacquainted and talked about our new year. Winter is here and with it the cold weather is upon us. VERY COLD! We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and several other books that had mittens in them. We have found matching mittens, added mittens, and counted mittens by two’s. We are writing a book and introducing the words said and have to our reading vocabulary.
THIS WEEK WE WILL: continue with mitten, snow and possibly penguin activities.
REPORT CARDS: are going home today. Please sign and return the envelope on tomorrow in the Friday folder.
DECEMBER BOOK SLIPS: Congratulations to Mason, Sophie, Connor, Cody, Johnny, Alison, Nolan, Isaac, Markus, Marley, Joshua, Kailey Michaela, Apryl and Alaya for meeting the goal of at least 10 books read for the month. Cody, Johnny, Markus and Kailey turned in 50 books! Good job! You will find your Pizza Hut coupon in the Friday Folder. I know with the holiday it wasn’t always easy to make time to read with your child. It does pay off though. Please continue to read every night and turn in the reading slips as you get 10 books read. If you have not been reading with your child, it is not too late. Start tonight!
BOOK ORDER: There is a Scholastic book order enclosed. Please return the order next Monday with the Friday Folder. Be sure to put the order form along with the money sealed in an envelope. Letter and Word Rings: Every student needs to be able to recognize all the letters and the sounds they make very soon. Most of the children have mastered this already. I am making a “word ring” for each child. As they “pass” each set of 10 words they will receive a homework sheet. Please have your child make the book and return it so they can get their next set of “word ring” words. I will introduce it to the class this week and we will get started on it. It is so exciting!
BAG BOOKS: I am sending home little books in ziplock bags when I feel your child is ready for this challenge. Please read the book several times with your child. Begin by looking at the pictures and have your child tell you what he/she thinks is happening in the story. Then go back and read it to your child. Then go back again and have the child try to read it to you. The children are at different stages in their reading readiness. Help them where they need it and encourage them. WEEK IN A PEEK!

THIS WEEK WE: finished our Little Elf book and sent it home. Their handwriting is improving quite a lot when they have the handwriting lines to guide them. Polar Express day was great along with our holiday party. Everyone seemed to be pleased with their stocking. It was full and nearly overflowing. Thanks for your generous input.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: be gone for winter break. Read lots of books together and enjoy family and friends!
When we come back, we will be reading books about the winter season and especially mittens.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: I would like for someone to come for about 30 minutes every morning from 8:40 to 9:10 to listen to the children read and check out a new book to them. Think about it over the break. If we have 2 people that can do it two mornings a week, would be great! Let me know if this would be of interest to you.
Community Outreach Project: We would like for everyone to bring a pair of mittens or gloves to put on a Mitten Tree. They will be donated to Least of These to be given to those in need. We did this last year. Least of These is a local organization and was so very grateful for our donation last year.

THIS WEEK WE: had Little Elf hearing, smelling, tasting, touching and seeing all kinds of things. We are putting together a book and will finish that on Monday.
We are also measuring various items like our shoes, tables, books etc. with unifix cubes and chain links. You can practice at home. Encourage them to start at one end and line them up next to each other to determine their length.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: be finishing up a few things and enjoy Polar Express on Tuesday.
CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE:
We will have a class exchange on Tuesday, December 22nd. We are going to fill a stocking for each child! Everyone is asked to bring enough little treats for each child in our class. Examples would be 19 erasers, pencils, pieces of wrapped candy, balloons, bubbles, etc. Things that you might provide for a birthday party as favors. We will have a low key “class family” celebration sometime on Tuesday. Parents are not asked to assist with this one. I know you are busy getting ready for your family celebrations. I will provide some simple treats and they will stuff stockings and receive their stocking. That is also our school wide Polar Express Day! We will all be wearing our pajamas, singing Christmas carols and having hot chocolate!!
END OF SEMESTER: The end of the semester will be December 23rd. I am nearly finished testing each child.
FAST START: I will send home a new set of papers on Monday. You can do the same type of activities with books that you read at home also!
SERVICE PROJECT: Thanks to all that were able to come last Sat. to the nursing home. I think the residents enjoyed our visit and helped to brighten their day!

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents:
THIS WEEK WE: traveled around the world looking at the traditions that families have in other countries. They really enjoyed taking their passports and “flying” to Sweden, Holland, Mexico, Germany, and Israel. They should have a suitcase full of souvenirs to show you and I hope a little bit of knowledge about holiday customs from those countries.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: begin a unit on the “Senses”. Each day we will focus on one of our senses. We will come up with some “sense”sational activities.
CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE:
We will have a class exchange on Tuesday, December 22nd. We are going to fill a stocking for each child! Everyone is asked to bring enough little treats for each child in our class. Examples would be 19 erasers, pencils, pieces of wrapped candy, balloons, bubbles, etc. Things that you might provide for a birthday party as favors. We will have a low key “class family” celebration sometime on Tuesday. Parents are not asked to assist with this one. I know you are busy getting ready for your family celebrations. Breakfast is served by IHOP on Saturday, Dec. 12 from 8-11 a.m. and admission is $3 per person with a maximum of $10 per family. Activities include: letters to Santa, Christmas crafts, story time with Principal Sutherland, and raffle baskets. Pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus are available from Life Touch Photography for $12.
SERVICE PROJECT: On Saturday, Dec. 12th we will meet at the Christian Health Care, 1104 N. Main St., at 9:50a.m. We will deliver our treat to the residents as they get out of their morning exercise class!
We will meet right inside the main entrance. See you there!

WEEK IN A PEEK!

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: read several versions of the classic tale of the Gingerbread Man and compared them with each other. They are very much the same but different in many ways, especially, The Stinky Cheeseman. Ask your child about that one. We ended the week by making a couple items to give to residents at the Christian Health Care here in Nixa. Thanks to all that sent money and those that were able to come help. (I definitely could not have done it without you! :)
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: take a trip around the world to five different countries to see how each one traditionally celebrates the holiday season. I will be asking the kids about what their family usually does every year during the holidays. You may want to share with them stories about “Aunt Betty” and “Great Granddaddy” this weekend. Each Kindergarten teacher has developed a special lesson about a country that they will share with all the classes next week. Be sure to ask everyday where they traveled. I am preparing a ”suitcase” and a “passport” for them so they won’t have trouble making it through “customs”.

WEEK IN A PEEK!
Nov. 25, 2009
Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: It has been a short week but one that was packed with activity. The feast was truly a feast with lots of bounty. I know they will enjoy their vest and headband. We owe a big thanks to Kailey’s mom for sewing the vests. Also to all that came to help setting up before and cleaning up after the feast! We just couldn’t do it without you! You are awesome!
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: be doing a book study on the classic fairy tale, “The Gingerbread Man.” Many of you know this famous tale of a gingerbread cookie who suddenly comes to life and leads the other characters on a wild goose chase through the town. In most versions of the story, the gingerbread man finally meets his match when he tries to outsmart a sly fox. We will be reading several different versions of this story, and will discover that they are not all the same!
I am sending a construction paper gingerbread man with this newsletter. Notice it is plain, not a feature to be found. Your job, as a family, is to decorate the gingerbread man (but then again, who’s to say it has to be a man? It could be a girl. It’s up to you!) You can use any materials you want (ex. beans, ribbon, glitter, buttons, construction paper for clothes, etc.). Your imagination is the only limit!!! Please return the completed gingerbread person to school when we return from the Thanksgiving holiday.
I hope you enjoy completing this project with your Kindergartener. I can’t wait to see your family’s gingerbread man!
Service Project: Plans are made to make our service project next Friday at 1:10-2:00. If you are able to come and help, that would be great. Remember the delivery to the Christian Health Care at 1104 N. Main St. here in Nixa on Dec. 12th at 9:50a.m. We will greet the residents as they are getting out of an exercise class that morning!

THIS WEEK WE: talked about how thankful we are for our mom and dad, brothers, sisters, grandparents and the USA. Of course, we wrote a book. It is titled,
“I Am Thankful”.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: continue our theme. I will begin testing soon for 2nd quarter goals. Please work with your child on letter recognition and sounds. SERVICE PROJECT: We are planning a community service project for our class instead of making gingerbread houses this year. I have contacted an Assisted Living Center and they are thrilled that we are considering making a treat for some of their residents and delivering it to them. My thought is to make a simple craft project, fill it with peppermint candy and take it to the residents. We will make the project at school and then meet on a Saturday morning to deliver our treat to the residents. Maybe we could sing a song as we deliver them. The complete details are not yet worked out. We will need some help with funds. Mrs. Sutherland has given me the go ahead to ask for a $2.00 donation from each student for the supplies. I will take care of purchasing everything. The other thing needed is parent help to get it put together. The making of our service project craft will be on Dec. 4th at 1:05-2:00p.m. I would invite any that can come and help us out to be here at that time. Please understand that our class is doing this en lieu of making the gingerbread houses that Kindergarten has done the last few years. It will be a great project to stress doing something kind for others this holiday season. In the meantime, I would ask that you send $2.00 to school with your child next week and I will get all the necessary supplies. Also mark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 12th. We will meet at the Christian Health Care Center, 1104 North Main here in Nixa at 9:50a.m. to deliver our gift. This is also the date of Breakfast with Santa at Mathews Elementary. My hope is that you will consider taking in both of these opportunities! Thank you in advance for all the help and support!

WEEK IN A PEEK!
November 13, 2009
Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: talked about the first Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims’ Native American friends that taught them how to survive in this new land. We worked on Indian outfits and read about how Pilgrim and Indian boys and girls lived. We wrote a book after giving ourselves an Indian name. It may become their nickname this year.
The Veteran’s Day Assembly was on Tuesday. I hope they got a sense of appreciation for the men and women that serve in our armed forces.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: continue talking out being thankful and about the first Thanksgiving feast.
FUNDRAISER: We had an assembly this morning to find out the results of our fundraiser effort. Several from our class received hats! Each seller had tickets that went into a jar to select the lucky winner of being the principal for a day. Our very own Kailey won! We are so excited! Mrs. Sutherland will let us know when that day will be. One of her duties will be to purchase some new playground equipment! Our class was also one of the top selling classes! For that we received a $50 gift certificate from IPA (an educational supply store)!
NUTRITION NIGHT: Tuesday, Nov. 17th at 6:30-8:30p.m. Details enclosed.
FEAST: Thank you for signing up to send an item for our Thanksgiving feast. It will be Nov. 24th at 1:05 in the afternoon. If you volunteered to help set up and serve, please be here at 12:45p.m. I will send a reminder in the next week newsletter. We will dress the part of the first thanksgiving, parade into the gym and I am sure it will be a bountiful feast. (definitely a picture taking moment!)

Dear Parents,
THIS WEEK WE: read about leaves and the trees they come from. We made more graphic organizers as we sorted Fall leaves. They worked as a team at each table group and made their own small bar graph to show the results. Thanks for the leaves you sent. I hope you enjoyed going for that nature walk.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL: talk about Native Americans and how they helped the Pilgrims. We are working with numbers, specifically, identifying numbers to 31. Each child has a number ring here at school to help us practice. Practice at home too. Next Tuesday, we will honor veterans that have served our country. If you know a veteran you would like to invite to our Veteran’s Day assembly, please do so. There will be a reception especially for the veteran’s from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the library. Then at 9:00 all the students and guests will go into the gym for our assembly.
FEAST: Thank you for signing up to send an item for our Thanksgiving feast. It will be Nov. 24th from 2:30-3:20 in the afternoon. FAST START: Return the the Fast Start notebook on Monday with the Friday folder. We had very close to 100% participation this past week. Your child will benefit greatly from the time you spend each evening. Remember, it is just 10 min. a night!
FALL PARTY: It was today! Thanks to our moms for working hard to get it together and make it a special time for our class!
VETERANS DAY: Tuesday, Nov. 10th Assembly in the gym at 9:00. It might be nice to wear red, white or blue.
CONGRATULATIONS: The following people have earned a coupon from Pizza Hut for meeting our reading goal the month of October! They are: Mason, Ashcroft, Sophie, Connor, Cody, Johnny, Alison, Chris, Nolan, Erin, Isaac, Markus, Marley, Kailey, Michaela, Apryl, and Alaya. A special note of congratulations goes to Kailey for reading 80 books! Thank you again for filling out the book slips and reading with your child. Also I think it would be fine to count the 10 minutes an evening as a book that you work on Fast Track. Just write Fast Track and the title of the poem!
